जन नानक बिन आपा चीन्हे, 
मिटै न भ्रमकी काई...गुरुबाणी

Nanak says: O man, without knowing thyself the darkness of illusion cannot be dispelled.

नानकजी कहते हैं: हे मनुष्य, बिना स्वयं को पहचाने भ्रम की मृगमरीचिका रूपी अँधेरे को दूर नहीं किया जा सकता हैं।

(राग शंकरा – तीन ताल )

काहे रे बन खोजन जाई।
सरब निवासी सदा अलेपा, तोही संग समाई॥१॥
पुष्प मध्य ज्यों बास बसत है, मुकर माहि जस छाई।
तैसे ही हरि बसै निरंतर, घट ही खोजौ भाई ॥२॥
बाहर भीतर एकै जानों, यह गुरु ग्यान बताई।
जन नानक बिन आपा चीन्हे, मिटै न भ्रमकी काई॥३॥

Why dost thou search for Him in the jungle? He is in thee always though unaffected by thee.

Even as the fragrance abides in the flower or the likeness in the mirror so is God everywhere, always. O brother, look for Him within thyself.

The guru teaches us that He is both within and without. Nanak says: O man, without knowing thyself the darkness of illusion cannot be dispelled.
