NAMASTE: I BOW IN HONOR OF THE DIVINE WITHIN YOU

DEEP SYMBOLISM BEHIND FOLDED HANDS!

The Indian greeting, Namaste, is conveyed by bring two hands together, held close to the heart.

Five fingers of each hand individually represent: Earth, water, fire, wind, and space elements—the five building blocks of all and everything.

Two hands apart represent duality—all our life is normally lived in duality—good-bad, high-low, day-night, happiness-sorrow, and so forth.

By bringing both hands together, the profound idea of unity and oneness of all existence is conveyed.

We are One indeed and everything affects everything. You cannot pluck a flower without disturbing a star.

Thus by bringing the folded hands together, the Oneness of Being, the unity of the individual self and the Universal Self is established and conveyed—knowing which one attains immortality: yat jñātvāmtam aśnute (Bhagavad Gītā 13.12).

The two folded hands are held close to the heart, signifying the seat of the Divine within. In Indian philosophy, heart is not regarded as a mere pump. It is considered to be the seat of the soul, our spiritual center.

Literally, the greeting Namaste, means… I bow in honor of the divine within you, us, all and everything.

Not far from the Christian response “Et cum spiritu tuo:” And with your spirit.

I BOW IN HONOR OF THE DIVINE WITHIN YOU

I honor the Truth, Beauty, and Goodness within you.
Because it is also within me.
In sharing these things,
There is no distance or difference between us.
We think we are different.
We are same.
We are one.
We are united.
We are One indeed.

Since everything affects everything,
let’s celebrate our unity in diversity.
Our hidden wholeness and common heritage.

Let’s together kneel and kiss the ground.
