A FEW RARE ONES STRIVE;
STILL RARER FEW ARRIVE
The following verse in the Bhagavad Gītā points out the rarity of the individuals who strive for the knowledge of the Ultimate Reality and extreme rarity of the ones who truly arrive:
manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye /
yatatām api siddhānāṃ kaścin māṃ vetti tattvataḥ // 7.3
Among thousands of people, a rare person strives for perfection or freedom (mokṣa). Even among those who strive and are perfect, only a rare person comes to know Me in truth.
The Gītā then goes on the provide the greatest pointers on the path:
tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā /
upadekṣyanti te jñānaṃ jñāninas tattvadarśinaḥ // 4.34
Know that (i.e., attain Self-Knowledge) by humble reverence, by asking proper questions and through service (to the wise). The wise, who have seen the Truth, will teach you that knowledge.
