Start with Yourself!

A novice, intent on self-realization, once approached a Zen master. He rushed in the master’s presence, carelessly banging the door. The master kindly inquired the young man about the reason of his visit. “I want to attain self-knowledge,” replied the young man. “Go first put your shoes in order that you have mindlessly left on the top of each other. On your way back, do not forget to apologize to the door that you carelessly pounded as you rushed in!” suggested the Zen master.

Similarly, once a young man went to Gurdjieff and said, “I want to make this world a better place to live. How and where should i start?”

“Next time when you use the public bathroom, do not forget to flush,” replied the master.

The student was a bit confused and pressed further for some more specific instructions.

Undaunted, Gurdjieff, said memorably, “When you are able to do small things well, you will one day be able to do big things well. When you start near, you will be able to go far one day. Start with yourself!”
